Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow…..Cold weather has arrived!!  Are you ready for winter??  Don’t let your pipes freeze this winter.  When temps drop below freezing it’s very common for plumbing problems to occur.  There are many things that homeowners can do to avoid these problems. Here are just a few:

  • If you notice your water pressure seems unusually low, act quickly and call a professional.  There may be restricted water flow due to freezing in the pipes.
  • Disconnect your garden hoses.  During cold winter nights if the hose is left connected, ice can form and cause pressure to build up in the water lines inside your home. We recommend you disconnect your garden hose and drain these water lines to help protect your home.
  • If it gets intensely cold, run water from every valve in your house to prevent the pipes from freezing.
  •  Keep your home temperature above 55 degrees and be sure to heat your entire house. This will allow warm air to circulate within your house thus preventing pipes from freezing.  You can also open cabinet doors under sinks and faucet near exterior walls to help keep these areas warmer.
  • If you are leaving your home unattended you should winterize your home by turning off the main water supply, draining the hot water tank and draining any water from fixtures in your home.  Remember to keep your thermostat at 55 degrees and have your furnace checked yearly to ensure it is working properly. If a power outage occurs or the furnace goes out, your pipes can freeze in a matter of hours during extreme temperature conditions.
