Want to stay friends with your garbage disposal?  Your disposal can last for years as long as you maintain it properly.   The average life of an in-sink garbage disposal is about 10 -12 years.  There are many things you can do to keep your garbage disposal going strong.

Here are some tips to help keep your garbage disposal working:

  • Never (EVER!) run your disposal without running the water too!
  • Toss in a few ice cubes now and again to help sharpen the blades and knock out small items that may be lodged in the disposal.
  • Freshen up your disposal with a few drops of lemon juice.  This will help keep your sink smelling fresh.
  • Don’t use drain cleaner or put any types of chemicals down your sink drain.

Here are some things you do NOT want to put in your garbage disposal:

  •  Starchy foods! Rice, potatoes, and pasta are a big NO!!   It is really hard to break down these starchy foods.  You can never break rice or pasta down small enough to fully pass through the drain! The same holds true with your dishwasher.  Avoid putting starchy foods  in the dishwasher!!
  •  Animal bones- The garbage disposal is not strong enough to break down bones!!  Animal bones are one of the most common things that jam disposals.  Pay attention to the meat you’re putting down the disposal just in case there is a small bone mixed in.
  •  Grease- Avoid putting large amounts of grease in your drain.  It can eventually solidify and clog a portion, or all, of your drain.
  •  Fruit seeds-large pits and small seeds can easily jam the disposal.
  • Stringy vegetables (celery stalks, whole asparagus, banana peels, etc.) – these do not do well in the disposal because they can become balls that clog the entire system.
